Caitlin Takes the Reins at AJ

From the 7th - 11th September, Arneil Johnston was delighted to invite Caitlin Milton to our offices in Stirling to join the team as part of her fourth year work experience placement. Did a week in Arneil Johnston scar her for life or did her experience of the housing consultancy world inspire hopes for a future career?

It's over to Caitlin to find out ...

Name: Caitlin Milton

Age: 14

School: Our Lady's High School, Cumbernauld

What Tasks did you perform during your week in Arneil Johnston?

  • Internet Research
  • Job Shadowing
  • Data Collection using Excel
  • Report & PowerPoint presentation
  • archiving
  • filing
  • binding documents
  • shredded confidential papers
  • learned about health and safety procedures
  • General office duties.

What do you know now after a week in AJ that you didn't know before?

I have learned a lot during my time here at Arneil Johnston. I have learned all about Standard Delivery Plans and the importance of them. I know all about the work Arneil Johnston does and how involved they are with Local Councils. I now know how to set up a presentation on Microsoft Office PowerPoint which will be useful in later life. I have learned how to file documents properly and how to bind them together. I have learned the importance of shredding confidential documents so that client's personal information and details are kept confidential. I have learned all about health and safety and what to do in case of an emergency.

What activity did you enjoy most?

During my time here at Arneil Johnston I have enjoyed meeting new people and working with all of them. I liked researching the information on the internet for my project and presentation, I found this very interesting and although it was difficult at some times I enjoyed the challenge.

What activity did you enjoy least?

When I was told I was going to be doing a presentation in front of everyone I wasn't looking forward to it a great deal but when preparing for it and while actually doing it I thoroughly enjoyed it. This will be very beneficial in later life and I am glad I had the opportunity to do it. I was also very proud of the response I got after my presentation thanks to my colleagues J Now, I don't know why I was nervous after all everyone was very supportive ! Overall there was nothing I didn't enjoy doing and nothing that I didn't benefit from.

What surprised you about the world of work?

I was surprised at the freedom you get while working. At Arneil Johnston they have flexi time which means that you can come in a bit late if you need to or work from home as long as you make up the time elsewhere. It is very different from school.

If Arneil Johnston were to offer you a job would you say yes?

I would definitely say yes! I have thoroughly enjoyed working here. Everyone is lovely and the work done is very interesting.

Are you sad or relieved to go back to school?

I will be sad to leave Arneil Johnston as it has been a great experience for me and I am very glad I was given the opportunity and I would certainly do it again!

Was the experience of working in Arneil Johnston a good one?

When I was in school before Work Experience there was the worry that I might not have been able to come to Arneil Johnston and I was quite disappointed but everything turned out well in the end and I was able to come to Arneil Johnston. I am very happy that it did! Arneil Johnston has provided me with experience of what my working life may be like in the future. I have a clear insight into what Arneil Johnston does and wouldn't mind doing this as my actual job in the future. I would like to thank everyone at Arneil Johnston for supporting me throughout and putting up with me! It has been a pleasure working here for the past week, if only it were longer!
